Which book is the official Life in the UK handbook?
The official Life in the UK handbook is the Guide for New Residents. The Stationery Office (TSO) sells the printed book as the 3rd edition, ISBN 9780113413409. GOV.UK says you will only be tested on information from this Guide, and that you should study it to prepare for the test.
Apps, videos and practice websites can help you practise, but none of them replaces the Guide as the source for the test.

How to recognise the official handbook
Other books can use similar words in their titles, so check the details rather than the cover. TSO's Official Life in the UK Learning Zone lists the official printed book with these details:

Life in the UK handbook vs the Official Study Guide
The names are close, but the official products do different jobs. Check which one you are buying.

The Official Study Guide has a publishing date of 2 April 2013. Because TSO describes it as a supplement, start with the Guide for New Residents and decide later whether you want the extra book.
Any printed book with a different ISBN is not the Guide TSO lists, whatever its title says.
Is there a Life in the UK handbook 2026 edition?
A year printed on a cover does not make a book a new official edition. The official book TSO sells is the 3rd edition, with a publishing date of 28 January 2013.
In a written answer on 13 July 2026, the Home Office said it was reviewing the test and would announce any changes in due course. It said transitional arrangements would be in place so that applicants have sufficient notice.

Is there a free Life in the UK handbook PDF?
A free PDF is not one of the formats GOV.UK names. The official formats are the book, eBook and audio mentioned above, sold through the official shop. If you want to read on a screen, choose the eBook.
Copies of the text posted elsewhere online are not the official product, and you cannot easily tell whether one is complete, current or altered. The official booking service's help pages strongly advise preparing with only the official learning materials, to avoid incorrect or misleading information. For that reason, this page does not link to unofficial copies.
What the Life in the UK handbook covers

TSO also says every section ends with 'Check that you understand' boxes, and the book has a glossary of key words and phrases.
Use those boxes as a checklist. If you cannot explain a point in your own words, reread that part before you try questions on it.
Is the 2013 handbook out of date?
GOV.UK announced that the new test, based on the revised handbook, went live on 25 March 2013. TSO says the latest impression of the Guide includes a list of amendments, but a 2013 text may not reflect everything that has happened since.

Using the handbook with practice
Read one section, close the book and explain the main points aloud. Come back to the same topic on another day and see what you still remember. Our revision method sets out a fuller routine.
